Im VW-Werk im niedersächsischen Emden werden bereits seit einiger Zeit die ersten Vorserienfahrzeuge des Elektro-SUV ID.4 gebaut. Im Frühjahr 2022 soll die Produktion dort starten. VW hatte das Werk in der strukturschwachen Region für eine Milliarde Euro umgebaut. Es wird nach Zwickau zum zweiten deutschen Standort ausgebaut, in dem Volkswagen angle neuen Elektromodelle produzieren will. „Mit dem Umbau des Standortes Emden zum E-Werk machen wir einen weiteren entscheidenden Schritt in der Transformation von Volkswagen zum softwaregetriebenen Anbieter nachhaltiger Mobilität“, sagte Christian Vollmer, Produktionsvorstand der Marke VW, am Dienstag bei einem Werksbesuch in Emden. Das Unternehmen hat dafür die vorhandenen Produktionsanlagen umgebaut, aber auch zusätzliche Hallen für die Fertigung errichtet. Vollmer sagte, wesentlich sei dabei eine „deutlich gesteigerte Produktivität, um Volkswagen nachhaltig profitabel aufzustellen“.
Bei der Produktivität setzt vor allem der amerikanische Wettbewerber Tesla VW unter Druck. Die Amerikaner wollen ein agenda vernetztes Elektroauto in nur rund zehn Stunden produzieren, im sächsischen VW-Werk in Zwickau wird dafür noch rund drei Mal so lang gebraucht. In Zwickau hatte VW sein erstes Werk im Inland komplett auf die Produktion von Elektroautos umgebaut. Dort laufen die ersten rein batteriebetriebenen Modelle der Marke VW vom Band, der ID.3 und der Elektro-SUV ID.4. Schon seit dem Frühjahr 2020 arbeiten rund 400 Beschäftigte aus Zwickau in Emden mit, um den Kollegen dort ihre Erfahrungen im Anlauf der Produktion weiterzugeben. In der niedersächsischen Hafenstadt werden rund 8000 Mitarbeiter für ihre neuen Aufgaben qualifiziert.
